Every Morning

Monday-Friday 8-8:45 AM – Morning Stretch to Classic Rock (with Jahnema and Dan)

Join Jahnema and Dan for Classic Rock-n-Roll with stretching with such classic music as Moody Blues “Days of Future Past,” Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon,” or Beautiful Day “It’s a Beautiful Day.” Start your mornings off with great movement and great music!

Mondays

Mondays 6-7 PM – Adult Tap Dancing (with Haley Nicole)

Tap Dance is a deeply American tradition, a superior stress eliminator, calorie burner, and mood elevator! In this class, students will learn simple steps and rhythm patterns while getting an excellent mental and physical workout that is so fun, they will forget they are exercising. Mondays 7-8 PM – Dancer’s Body Barre (with Haley Nicole)

Requiring no equipment but the barre and their own body weight, students utilize techniques from Pilate’s, Yoga, Ballet, and Lotte Berk to sculpt and elongate muscles, trim fat, and lift and shape the entire body with a challenging and rewarding ZERO impact workout. Haley Nicole is a life-long professional dancer with extensive teaching, training, and performance experience across several genres. This session is focuses on Nostalgic Modern Cabaret Inspired by Reda and the Golden Age of Cinematic Bellydance! It is a refined, teasing, graceful interpretation of instrumental song Nova Raqs. Tuesdays 12:30-4:30 PM – Life Model Long-Pose All Mediums (with Shelley Johnson)

Sculpture, painting, and drawing with a life model in long poses (one pose will be used for four weeks). Comfortable 1300 sqft in-the-round work space with natural and studio lighting. (Model fees included in class fee.) $35 each week.

Tuesdays 6-7 PM – Circles Aglow Hoop and Flow Dance (with Fiery Grace)

Come experiment with hula-hoop skills, techniques, and dance with a variety of hoop sizes and types! No experience needed, no cost for participation.

Tuesdays – American Tribal Style® (ATS®) Bellydance with Cat Ellen

American Tribal Style® Belly Dance (ATS®) is a modern improvisational style of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance® director, Carolena Nericcio. This style of dance focuses on synchronized group improvisation. Cat Ellen is an ATS certified instructor, a Sister Studio of FCBD. Read more about ATS at NEMA.

  • 2019 Session 3: May 7, May 14, May 21, Jun 4, Jun 18, Jun 25 (no class May 28 or Jun 11) 6-week session

Tuesdays 8-9 PM: Level 1 – ATS® Dance Fundamentals

ATS® Dance Fundamentals: Level One introduces the basic movements of ATS® through instruction and drills. Dancers then use this foundational vocabulary to dance with partners in duet, trio, and quartet formations. Zills (finger cymbals) are requested from week three on. Students may bring their own cymbals or may make arrangements to purchase them from the instructor. (Both metal and wooden zills are available for sale. Loaner zills are available at NEMA for a $1 donation to the studio per class.)

  • Level One: Open to all dancers
      • Levels: Fundamentals are appropriate for All Levels (beginning on up)
    • Tuition: Special Guest Workshop: not included in NEMA membership. Tuition due at first day of session. (Classes range from $10-15 each, depending on the class card purchased.) NEMA members receive a discount. See pricing details.
    • Class Dates: Starts May 7, runs through June 25 (no class May 28 or June 11)

Tuesdays 7-8 PM: Level 2 – ATS® Tribal Combinations

ATS® Tribal Combinations: Level Two In this class, dancers expand on the fundamental movements with new combos, layers, and formation variations. Put together, Levels One and Two are considered Classic ATS®. This syllabus is presented in 12 weeks total, so two sessions are needed to get a full introduction to Level 2. Zills (finger cymbals) are required.

  • Level Two: Instructor approval required for enrollment
    • Level: Dancers must be able to lead and follow all the Level One material and zill throughout. (Instructor approval needed)
    • Tuition: Special Guest Workshop: not included in NEMA membership. Tuition due at first day of session. (Classes range from $10-15 each, depending on the class card purchased.) NEMA members receive a discount. See pricing details.

Wednesdays 6-7 PM – Gypsy Tribal Fusion (with Natasya Katsikaris)

The Gypsies, more properly called Romani, have a rich music and dance culture in the Balkans, Turkey, Greece, and Spain. In this class, you’ll learn Tribal Fusion Bellydance mixed with Romani dances and music. You’ll get a full body workout while learning a spicy mix of traditional and modern dance moves. Mixed-level format is suitable for beginners – advanced. Beginners will focus on simple chorus combinations while advanced dancers can hone their leadership and solo skills.

Wednesdays 7-8 PM – Beginning Belly Dance (with Jahnema & Michelle)

Learn beginning Belly Dance movement: hip circles, figure eights, hip drops, hip lifts, and more with NEMA Dance Directors, Jahnema and Michelle. Explore several music styles of dance and master NEMA’s signature beginner dances, “Harem” and “Mermaid.” Learn and polish your basic beginning movements with these simple yet elegant dance choreography. Finger cymbals will be used in this class.

Wednesday 8-9 PM – NEMA Dance Company Rehearsal (with Rhea and Jahnema)

The NEMA Dance Company, directed by Jahnema, meets weekly and performs throughout Ventura, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara counties. Mandatory dress rehearsals are required, and only committed studio members should attend.

Thursdays

Thursdays 9-10 AM – Shimmy While Kids are Gone (with Tomoko Wynn)

This is a beginner Belly Dance Class in the morning while your kids are away. We focus on isolations and easy choreography. Even if your kids are all grown up or if school is on vacation, come enjoy dancing at NEMA Belly Dance Studio.

Tomoko Wynn has 37 years of dance experience, along with years as an aerobics instructor. She achieved teacher certification from Alexandra King, and has traveled from Hokkaido to Okinawa Japan, performing publicly. She also specializes as a Reiki master and teacher, plus as a Chakra Dance Facilitator. Her passion is for pursuing dance and healing: Live to dance! Dance to Live! Live for Reiki! Reiki for Life!

Thursdays 6-7 PM – Introduction to Egyptian Dance (with Zahra Sami)

In this beginner class you will learn the foundational movements of Oriental (Egyptian) dance technique. This class will enable you to understand how to execute each movement in an easy to follow format, while having a great time! Each hour long class has a warm up, across the floor/ technique practice and we will learn a fun choreography as well, focusing on the key movements you are learning in class.

Zahra is an award winning dancer and teacher. Certified by the Academy of Egyptian Dance. Zahra most recently taught at the Nile Group Festival in Cairo, Egypt and was a featured performer in “Sahar on the Nile.” Her message to all of you, “I’d love to be able to share my passion and expertise in Egyptian Dance with you!”

Thursdays 7-8 PM – Salsa (with Dee-Dee Martin)

Basic Salsa Dance: An ALL LEVELS, choreography-based dance class developed to teach core Salsa footwork and effortless flow! The choreography will be presented on the first day of class, broken down and taught throughout the quarter, then danced as a group on the last day of class.

Thursdays 8-9 PM – African/Caribbean Dance (with Dee-Dee Martin)

African/Caribbean Dance: An ALL LEVELS, choreography based dance class that fuses African and Caribbean style dance moves for a sexy, energetic, raw, and intense body rolling experience! The choreography will be presented on the first day of class, broken down and taught throughout the quarter, then danced as a group on the last day of class.

Fridays

Friday 6-7 PM – Street Dance (with Jeric)

Street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music by dance crews in the 70’s have evolved as part of hip hop culture, including a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping. Students will learn hip hop fundamental moves broken down for dancers. Original choreography will be taught in a stress-free and fun environment with opportunities to perform at local festivals and venues. No experience necessary.

Friday 7-6 PM – Belly Dance Basics (with Rhea)

This basic belly dance technique class will breakdown movements with hands-on adjustments and drilling techniques. Shimmies, undulations, and basic hip arm and chest movements will be integrated to combinations and improvisational exercises.

Fridays 8-9 PM – Dance (with Nilay Engin)

Beginner – Intermediate Summer Belly Dance with Emphasis on 9/8

Nilay will teach a 9/8 rhythm weighted technique and choreography class to learn Rompi Rompi choreography and perform it in several different ways from beginner to intermediate level options. We will explore many other technique and rhythm knowledge and applications along the side to develop multiple layers of belly dancing skills and movement repertoire during this summer session


Saturdays

Saturdays 2-3 PM – Fusion Zumba (with Dee-Dee Martin)

Zumba Fusion develops on the traditional Zumba classes to expand beyond the boundaries of traditional Zumba basics – Merengue, Cumbia, Salsa, and Reggaeton – to include exciting rhythms in African, Afrobeats, Popular Jams, Reggae, and SOCA! New and creative dance moves are infused throughout the session to help provide a fresh and unique experience for every participant! Every participant will experience the fullness of motion as we play with intense body movement and traveling space movement, shifting between high and moderate impact music tempos! As the class progresses, other cultural rhythms will be added along the way!

Saturdays 3-4 PM – Arabic Drumming: Skillz & Drillz (with Jahnema and Dan) [1st and 3rd Saturdays]

NEMA Belly Dance offers a beginning drumming class each session where participants learn how to play the Belly Dance rhythms. The Dumbek or Darabuka (sometimes called, “tabla”) is one of the most prestigious instruments in belly dance music. To many, it is the heart and the soul of the dance. NEMA’s drum sessions are informal and friendly sessions that include men and women all ages. Students will learn the basics of hand drumming and middle eastern rhythms. Drums will be provided.

  • Levels: No experience necessary. All are welcome.

Saturdays 4-5 PM – Lyrical Hip-Hop (with Plan) (ages 7-adult)

Develop self-confidence, discipline, respect, and good behavior through dance and movement with Plan. This dance style is a combination of movement that triggered emotional context and feelings its a great way to express and explore the altitude of modern dancing using SLOW and SHARP expressive movements and hip-hop music as a base genre. It was popularized by Shane Spark, from the TV show, “So you think you can dance.”

  • Levels: Open to all levels, ages 7 to adult

Plan (Harvey Fenellere) is a professional dancer choreographer who has worked with various models and actors and worked as a backup dancer for singers and artists. He teaches Modern dance using hip-hop genre as a base music. He has performed in the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and the United States. He has been featured in various commercials and shows such as Coke, Switch dance game, and competed in many Hip-Hop competitions. He specializes in Break Dancing B-boy, Jazz Funk, Pop and Locking, Tutting, Stomping, Robotics, Contemporary, Lyrical Hip-hop, Street Hip-hop, and Krumping.


Once Per Month

Second Saturdays 10-11 AM – Bellydance with Reiki Drum meetup (with Tomoko Wynn)

Belly Dance with Reiki Drum: This is a two-for-one class. In the first part of the class, we learn simple and sensual Belly Dance movements. Afterwards, you dance as you want with a Reiki-charged buffalo drum. Release your sensuality! Release your creativity!
