Monday Evenings

6-7 PM Adult Tap Dancing with Haley Nicole

Burn calories while having fun. Learn steps and simple rhythm patterns while relieving stress. Haley Nicole is a classically trained tap dance instructor who is patient, thorough, talented, and supportive. A class not to miss. Check out all of Haley’s classes.

  • Levels: Mixed Levels
  • Tuition: Not included in NEMA membership, tuition is paid to the instructor. ($75 for 6 class session)

7-8 PM Barre with Haley Nicole

Sculpt, burn fat while elongating muscles for a more flexible and happier you. This class is high-intensity, low-impact, full-body workout that combines ballet-based movements with core-focused exercises, and stretching.

  • Levels: Mixed Levels
  • Tuition: Not included in NEMA membership, tuition is paid to the instructor. ($75 for 6 class session)

8-9 PM Belly Dancing with Haley Nicole

Haley Nicole is a life-long professional dancer with extensive teaching, training, and performance experience across several genres. This session is focuses on Nostalgic Modern Cabaret Inspired by Reda and the Golden Age of Cinematic Bellydance! It is a refined, teasing, graceful interpretation of instrumental song Nova Raqs.

Tuesday Evenings

American Tribal Style® (ATS®) Bellydance with Cat Ellen

American Tribal Style® Belly Dance (ATS®) is a modern improvisational style of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance® director, Carolena Nericcio. This style of dance focuses on synchronized group improvisation. Cat Ellen is an ATS certified instructor, a Sister Studio of FCBD. Read more about ATS at NEMA.

  • 2018 Session 5: Sep 11, Sep 18, Sep 25, Oct 2, Oct 9, Oct 16 – 6 week session
  • 2018 Session 6: Oct 23, Oct 30, Nov 6, Nov 13, Nov 20, Nov 27 – 6 week session

Level 2 – ATS® Tribal Combinations: Tuesdays 7-8 PM (new class!)

ATS® Tribal Combinations: Level Two In this class, dancers expand on the fundamental movements with new combos, layers, and formation variations. Put together, Levels One and Two are considered Classic ATS®. This syllabus is presented in 12 weeks total, so two sessions are needed to get a full introduction to Level 2. [Session 5 will cover weeks 1-6, Session 6 will cover weeks 7-12.] Zills (finger cymbals) are required. (Instructor approval needed for Level 2)

  • Level: Dancers must be able to lead and follow all the Level One material and zill throughout. (Instructor approval needed)
  • Tuition: Not included in NEMA membership, tuition is paid to the instructor. (Classes range from $10-15 each, depending on the class card purchased.) NEMA members receive a discount. See pricing details.

Level 1 – ATS® Dance Fundamentals: Tuesdays 8-9 PM (new time!)

ATS® Dance Fundamentals: Level One introduces the basic movements of ATS® through instruction and drills. Dancers then use this foundational vocabulary to dance with partners in duet, trio, and quartet formations. Zills (finger cymbals) are requested from week three on. Students may bring their own cymbals or may make arrangements to purchase them from the instructor. (Both metal and wooden zills are available for sale. Loaner zills are available at NEMA for a $1 donation to the studio per class.)

  • Levels: Fundamentals are appropriate for All Levels (beginning on up)
  • Tuition: Not included in NEMA membership, tuition is paid to the instructor. (Classes range from $10-15 each, depending on the class card purchased.) NEMA members receive a discount. See pricing details.

Wednesdays Evenings

6-7 PM Turkish Belly Dance with Natasya Katsikaris

Learn two deliciously saucy dance routines—Kisaltmalar: A fast-paced humorous Tribal Fusion dance with Turkish Gypsy 9/8 flavor. Spins, Zills, Skirts! and Soode Soode: classic 1960s-70s vintage cabaret routine – East Coast Greek Nightclub style. Both classes includes zills, veil, and classic old school cabaret technique.

7-8 PM Beginning Belly Dance with Jahnema & Michelle

Learn beginning Belly Dance movement: hip circles, figure eights, hip drops, hip lifts, and more with NEMA Dance Directors, Jahnema and Michelle. Explore several music styles of dance and master NEMA’s signature beginner dances, “Harem” and “Mermaid.” Learn and polish your basic beginning movements with these simple yet elegant dance choreography. Finger cymbals will be used in this class.

8-9 PM NEMA Dance Company Rehearsal

The NEMA dance company, directed by Jahnema, meets weekly and performs throughout Ventura, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara counties. Mandatory dress rehearsals are required, and only committed studio members should attend.

Thursday Mornings

9-10 AM Shimmy While Kids Are At School!

This is a belly dance class that focuses on body isolations, exercise, easy belly dance movements, and easy choreography. If you decide to take a more advanced class, this class most definitely will help! Shimmy while kids are gone! Stay-at-home Moms are welcome. Even if you are not a stay-at-home Mom, you are welcome!

Saturday and Sunday Afternoons

These days are reserved for NEMA workshops and individuals or groups wanting to rent the NEMA Studio and/or NEMA Performances. Individuals holding full session NEMA Memberships will have discount on all workshops.

Classes Outside the Studio

 Arabic Drum Rhythms and Riffs

This beginners drum class, led by Jan and Dan, will focus on the basic Middle Eastern hand drumming techniques associated with an urban 4/4 Maqsoum folk rhythmic style common in Middle Eastern music. Patterns will be drilled to increase and refine drumming skills. Drums will be provided.
